This work was commissionned by “Festival de Rocamadour” in 2015 as a tribute to Francis Poulenc.
Stabat Mater is a sequence of Roman liturgy that transcribes all the sorrow of a mother watching her son dying on the cross.
She is showing a suffering yet full of love figure. I want to convey those two feelings to the audience. In the style of Poulenc, the diapered harmonies are suddenly followed by a tumultuous and boiling movement describing the suffering mother. The gregorian theme is constitutive in the piece and appears at the beginning. The music is then following this inspiration, with the text in the foreground valorized by a melody an harmonies transposing its affects as the unique echo of its wailings and the true portrait of her torment.

Christopher GIBERT

The Stabat Mater is a 13th-century Catholic hymn to Mary,
which portrays her suffering as Jesus Christ's mother during his crucifixion.
Its author may be either the Franciscan friar Jacopone da Todi or Pope Innocent III. The title comes from its first line, Stabat Mater dolorosa, which means "the sorrowful mother was standing".
